During the meeting of the Commission on Cadastre and Land Management held within the framework of the FIG (International Federation of Surveyors) Working Week organized in Brisbane, Australia, in 2024, hosting options for the next-term meeting were discussed, and the Chamber of Geomatics Engineers of Türkiye formally expressed its interest in hosting this important meeting. The Chamber of Geomatics Engineers of Türkiye previously hosted the FIG Istanbul Congress successfully in 2018, under the theme “Embracing our smart world: Where the continents connect, enhancing the geospatial maturity of societies.” As of 2025, 100 years have passed since the adoption of the first cadastre law of the Republic of Türkiye. Throughout this century-long process, the International Federation of Surveyors has made indirect yet highly significant contributions in terms of following international good practices and advancing professional standards. From the preparation of policy documents aimed at completing cadastre activities, to strengthening institutional arrangements and developing technical standards, the influence of the knowledge, experience, and guidance materials produced under the umbrella of the International Federation of Surveyors is undeniable. The geographic coverage rate of cadastre systems has long been one of the indicators widely used to assess the quality of land administration systems. Today, Türkiye has an integrated and consolidated land registry and cadastre system under a single institutional structure, with an almost one hundred percent completion rate. Building on this strong foundation, the cadastre system in Türkiye continues its efforts to help shape the future vision of land administration. For this reason, hosting the 2026 FIG Commission 7 & 9 & UNECE WPLA International Conference (the Conference) has been considered both a meaningful and strategic objective for the Turkish Chamber of Geomatics Engineers. At the same time, it was recognized that addressing the process solely from a cadastre and land management perspective would not be sufficient. Therefore, a multidisciplinary and holistic approach was adopted to cover the different dimensions of land administration. In this context, a simultaneous and coordinated cooperation process was initiated with the UNECE WPLA (Working Party on Land Administration of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) on the themes of legal security and digitization of land registers, reflecting the Working Party’s historically and institutionally significant role in the field. In addition, cooperation was initiated with the Commission on Valuation of the International Federation of Surveyors to address real property valuation, a subject that directly affects the economy, finance, and all segments of society. As a result of this approach, the Conference was designed as a joint format bringing together the Commission on Cadastre and Land Management of the FIG, the Commission on Valuation of the FIG, and UNECE WPLA. The 2026 FIG Commission 2 & 7 & 9 & UNECE WPLA International Conference, to be hosted by the Turkish Chamber of Geomatics Engineers, also benefits from the direct and strong support of the General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre.
The Chamber of Geomatics Engineers of Türkiye, established in 1954, is a long-standing professional organization with approximately 20,000 members today. The Chamber of Geomatics Engineers of Türkiye has remained an active part of international professional cooperation as a member of the International Federation of Surveyors since 1969.
