This special social programme, offered as part of the 2026 FIG & UNECE WPLA International Conference, brings together Istanbul’s layered history and its unique geography connecting two continents in a single experience. Planned to depart from The Marmara Taksim after lunch, the tour will be conducted with a licensed professional tour guide to ensure a high-quality, smooth-flowing visit. The first stop will be the Roman Hippodrome, which once hosted chariot races and major public ceremonies during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The programme then continues to the Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) and the surrounding historic square, renowned for its elegant architecture and distinctive six minarets. Next, participants will visit the German Fountain, presented to the Ottoman Empire by Kaiser Wilhelm II, and learn about the historical background and diplomatic symbolism behind this gift. The highlight of the walking route will be Hagia Sophia, one of the world’s most significant monuments of architectural and cultural heritage, which has served at different times as a cathedral, a mosque, and a museum. Following the Historic Peninsula walk, the group will proceed to Eminönü for a Bosphorus Cruise. During this approximately two-hour boat tour, participants will enjoy panoramic views of Istanbul’s skyline while passing palaces, waterfront mansions, fortresses, and bridges that connect Europe and Asia. At the end of the programme, participants will be transferred back to the hotel. Through this programme, we aim to offer participants a strong complementary experience after the conference agenda—providing an opportunity to discover Istanbul up close and to experience the city’s historic heritage from a different perspective on the Bosphorus. Event selection and payment will be available as optional add-ons within the conference registration process.
